Living in Mangaluru: airport, trains, weather and areas
Short, direct answers about life in Mangaluru for people moving here, buying here or coming home from abroad.
Where is Mangaluru?
Mangaluru (Mangalore) is the largest city on the Karnataka coast and the headquarters of Dakshina Kannada district. It sits on the Arabian Sea where the Netravati and Gurupura rivers meet it, with the Western Ghats to the east. Tulu, Kannada, Konkani, Beary and Malayalam are all spoken; English is widely used.
The airport
Mangaluru International Airport (IXE) is at Bajpe, north-east of the city. It has flights to Indian cities and many to the Gulf, which is why so many families here have relatives in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain.
Trains
Mangaluru has two main stations: Mangaluru Central near Hampankatta, and Mangaluru Junction at Padil. Trains run north on the Konkan Railway towards Udupi, Goa and Mumbai, south into Kerala, and east to Bengaluru. A Vande Bharat Express runs along the coast to Madgaon (Goa). Check the railway's timetable for the latest trains and stops.
Roads
National Highway 66 runs along the coast through the city, from Talapady in the south to Mulki in the north. National Highway 75 runs east towards Bengaluru over the Ghats.
The port
The New Mangalore Port at Panambur is one of India's major ports, and the industrial areas at Baikampady and around the port are big employers.
Weather
Warm and humid all year, by the sea. The monsoon, mostly from June to September, brings heavy rain and turns everything green. October to February is drier and pleasant, the favourite season for visitors and for coming home from the Gulf. When you look at property, ask how the house and the road handle monsoon rain.
Beaches
Panambur, Tannirbhavi, Surathkal, Someshwar and Ullal beaches are all within the city.
